On the third kiss, Shen Wei responds, hands coming up to cradle his skull and press against him. He kisses Zhao with a resolve that doesn't ignite the heat simmering in Zhao's gut but instead spreads reverent warmth within in chest. As if Shen Wei's cherishing the first taste of something he's abstained from for ages. As if the urgent press of Shen Wei's mouth--gossamer-light and achingly familiar--is taking hold in Zhao's being, carving a space for Shen Wei to forever rest.

Despite knowing this, he can’t help but hope; hope that the years that he has spent devoting his life to Zhao Yunlan would make him finally worthy.

Zhao Yunlan has been running himself ragged trying to solve a case. Shen Wei convinces him to take a break for sleep and food, and Zhao Yunlan agrees on the condition that Shen Wei joins him.
