It took most of a day to get up into the mountains near Dragon City, and to the currently empty retreat facility the University kept. Shen Wei had been there before, shepherding various classes to and from the biosciences observation center a little further north. It was a fairly familiar area, by now, which meant the wave of nostalgia that hit him as they unpacked the car took him by surprise.

When General Kunlun is brought forward in time, he takes on the name Zhao Yunlan and settles in as a police officer to continue protecting the alliance. And then he meets a Dixing genetics professor who doesn't remember him at all...

Zhao Yunlan had fantasized about Shen Wei’s wings.

Of course he had, anyone with a pair of working eyes and some common sense would take one look at Professor Shen and wonder just what kind of wings he had. Zhao Yunlan spent much of his time alone – both in the secrecy of his office and at home – coming up with different types of wings for Shen Wei. From the moment their hands touched, Zhao Yunlan had felt as though something inside him had slotted into place, like finding the missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle, except he hadn’t ever realized that he was missing anything.

This was gold, as far as Zhao Yunlan was concerned. Lin Jing was in a quandary, and Shen Wei was about to reveal his dating history. This was a two-lollipop occasion.

A surge of fear and anger held Ye Zun still, both in removing the mask and approaching his brother.

If I don’t like it, I’ll just go back—that’s what I told myself. But I don’t want to go back. I’m going to get a job. I wish I could send you this. I wish you had come with me.

(A sequel to All the Colours of the World.)

The thing was, Zhao Yunlan wanted to blame it on the opera, except he’d found himself genuinely enjoying it. The first part, that is, before the attempt on his life.

Shen Wei pays a visit to a particular cave in Dixing that legends speak of.

Zhang Shi opened the door quickly, at his knock, brows rising as she saw both of them waiting. "Did something come up at the Division?"

"No." Shen Wei let the weight of his responsibilities settle over him, and saw the reflection of it in the half step back Zhang Shi took. "Things have come to my attention that must be addressed."

Shen Wei could give a number of reasons why he wanted to avoid Kunlun's incessant invitations to spar.

Professor Ouyang's work isn't through causing trouble, and everyone finds out why injuring Zhao Yunlan is an extremely bad idea. The Minster finds out a lot of things no one bothered to tell him earlier, and possibly wishes he hadn't taken the job. Drama with a Pinch of Action, Romance Of Course, I-4

Shen Wei enjoyed the quiet times in his life, the times when he had no miscreants to chase down; when the humans were calm, not indulging in wars of conquest or moving their seat of government again; when his chosen profession had no crises and he could let himself be soothed by completing the small, daily tasks. He enjoyed those times very much, but he didn't take them for granted.

“Why do you hate me so much?”

The question spills from his lips despite his own reservations. It hangs in the air between them, feeling like it could be a sword of damnation or a bridge and Shen Wei has no idea which one he wants it to be. He doesn’t even know why he returns here day after day, pleading and begging at the foot of an elaborate prison with a person he once knew was his brother.
