They’re the night customers, the night-dwellers, and Zhao Yunlan pays no mind to their oddities, just follows their direction when they ask for him leave their burgers raw, or not put salt in because it 'burns'; accepts the odd things that they give him along with their tips – like old coins from an age past that give him unprecedented good luck for a week, or sheaves of dry leaves that turn into winning lottery tickets overnight – and when they ask for him to give his name, with too many teeth in their perfect mouths, he winks and changes the subject.

There’s clinking in the kitchen, but nothing smells like dinner.

Zhao Yunlan finally opens his eyes, but there is no Shen Wei in bed with him, and really, why should there be?

He heaves out a heavy sigh and then startles badly when there’s a noise from the kitchen. He shoots up into a sitting position and cranes his neck around, only to relax immediately when he sees the familiar back of Shen Wei at his kitchen counter.

Shen Wei inhales slowly so he doesn't shake someone for information. "Explain to me what is happening."

"The blood curse," Chu Shuzhi says. "Zhao Chuzhang was attacked by a carrier."

"Why doesn't anyone just call it what it is?" Da Qing asks. "Vampires. We're talking about vampires."

Zhao Yunlan doesn't like being gagged. Young Shen Wei is intrigued.

“Shen Wei,” Zhao Yunlan whines, but Shen Wei gently steers him towards the bathroom.

“You’ll feel better afterwards,” Shen Wei promises and Zhao Yunlan groans.

“If you want me to shower so much, you can do it.”

Shen Wei freezes. This is not what he expected.

He’s pounding away into Shen Wei, who is on his hands and knees, pushing back wantonly every time Zhao Yunlan pushes forward. Sweat is dripping into his eyes, and the bed is creaking, and the rhythm is perfect. Shen Wei is making the most wonderful noises, loud in his ears even through the sound of his own gasping breaths. Zhao Yunlan bites his lip, trying to hold out just a little longer.
Suddenly Shen Wei tenses and shouts, “Wings! Wings!”

If Zhang Shi had truly understood what Zhao Yunlan was asking of him, he might have refused.

Shen Wei loves to watch Zhao Yunlan sleep, but after the latest scare that put Zhao Yunlan's life in danger, watching is no longer enough.
