Lin Nansheng dislikes and distrusts Yang Xiuxian from their very first meeting, only very shortly after Chen Moqun brings him to Shanghai. Chen Moqun describes him as the most talented forger in this entire city, a note of pride in an otherwise matter-of-fact tone.

“I’m an artist, Lao-Chen,” Yang Xiuxian complains. “That sort of thing is far behind me.”

Yang Xiuxian’s greatest charm, in Lin Nansheng’s eyes, had been those brief moments where he didn’t seem like he wanted anything. A brief moment of clumsiness and joy which had seemed momentarily endearing. Of course, that feeling had dissipated once the sleaziness had reappeared.

That is what "Xu Liwen" must be, Lin Nansheng decides. That clumsiness, that joy, that excitement to show something of oneself to another person… That is the most seemingly truthful. And because it is truthful, it will be charming.

Luo Fei yelps, jumping up after him, but the young man has already kicked the gun out of their enemy’s hand and has begun to beat him until his head lolls back, unconscious. Hopefully. Luo Fei doesn’t want to explain an unauthorized corpse to the French Concession police.

“Don’t kill him,” Luo Fei advises. “I have questions.”

The young man looks up, breathing hard, eyes wide. His knuckles are bloody and his bangs stick to his forehead with sweat.
Luo Fei’s eyes narrow as he remembers that the ringmaster had been beaten to death as well, albeit with a board found at the crime scene, not bare-handed.

Slowly, shakily the young man stands up.

Luo Fei watches him carefully, then can’t help laughing in anxious, amused disbelief when the young clown gives an elaborate bow on the bloodstained stage, and blows a shaky kiss to his audience of one.

One rainy day, a high school student Zhang Yuan meets interior designer Jing Ran under rather accidental circumstances. Considering the different lives they lead, things should have ended there, but thanks to fate and a diamond ring, they slowly become friends. Or perhaps more than friends...

After returning from Hong Kong, Lin Nansheng tries to find out what happened to Luo Fei.

There is a man at the door, dressed in a rather expensive-looking suit, looking around with a faint air of distaste. He has a cane in his hand and a certain confidence around him – Lin Nansheng notices all of that, but it is dulled by the realization that the man is really handsome.

In an alternate universe, Chen Moqun becomes a crime boss instead of the Station Chief. Lin Nansheng follows him either way, until he encounters an unexpected complication in the form of Luo Fei.

"This matter… Leave it to me. By the end of the week, I'll have everything arranged well." Slowly, he lets go of Jiang Yang's shoulder and gives it a pat, as he looks down. When he looks back up again, his expression has gentled. "Don't worry."

Jiang Yang can only stare at him. "I can't ask that of you," he finally settles on saying.

Luo Qingeng leans in, and Jiang Yang can't help but close his eyes as he feels the man's lips brush his cheek close to the corner of his mouth. "You don't have to," Luo Qingeng says, eyes curving mischievously. "I'm still looking forward to dinner."

Mo Sanbi has heard that when a person is about to die, their entire life flashes before their eyes. Or that when a person dies, the last thing they ever saw is still caught in the reflection of their eyeballs. The second thing is total bullshit – he’s seen enough dead people’s eyes to know that they don’t really reflect anything.

The first thing might not be true either, he doesn’t know. But when he sees Qiao Yicheng crumple to the ground, right in front of him, Mo Sanbi’s life does flash before his eyes. The past fifteen years roll by in a moment – in the sound of his own skipped heartbeat.

There’s a man’s voice: the sound of loud, ridiculously off-key singing – and splashing water. Jing Ran rings the bell again, wondering whether he should just leave. “Hello?”

There is a pause in the noise from the kitchen, then someone calls out, “Coming, coming!” and a young man comes out of the kitchen to the counter, wearing a stained apron, glasses hanging on a cord around his neck, and arms covered up to the elbows in soap suds.

Jing Ran stares at him. “…I’d like to order,” he says slowly.

At this point, the time Zhang Yuan stays at Mo Sanbi’s apartment is more than he does at his mother’s. The summer night is warm and thankfully drier than the humid day had been. They stand side-by-side on the tiny balcony, and Mo Sanbi gets his cigarettes out. Reflexively, he offers the box to Zhang Yuan, and is surprised when Zhang Yuan looks up at him and asks, "Is it really okay?"

"Sure," Mo Sanbi says, shrugging, a little amused.

Zhang Yuan takes it and puts it in his mouth. He holds the unlit cigarette with his lips, then leans forward into the lighter that Mo Sanbi holds out for him. There's something a little ambiguous about the gesture, and Mo Sanbi finds himself looking away and flicking the lighter closed quite quickly.

"Lin Nansheng woke stiff and sore. He didn't want to wake up but his body refused to let him continue reliving that memory. The memory of their last time together. He lay there with his eyes shut, but try as he might, he couldn't chase away the knowledge of everything that had happened since."

After the disaster of the Zhu Yizhen case, Chen Moqun is sent away to Nanjing and Lin Nansheng is left all alone. Lost, he wanders Shanghai until a certain private detective forces his way into his life. What motive could he have for helping someone like Lin Nansheng, especially now that Shanghai is on the brink of war?

Lin Nansheng wakes up in an alley, with no idea where he is or how he got there. Then he meets Jiang Yang and a new life slowly opens up before them.

“Laoban,” He sounds more than a little panicked. “he fell out of the painting.”

“I fell out of the painting.” Qi Yuanruo sighs, “I apologize, but could I have something to drink? You said not to drink any of the water from the tap.” He says the last word a little disbelievingly like he’s still wrapping his head around the concept.

“Right!” A Li pops up, ramrod straight. “I’ll make tea.”

When he gets behind Qi Yuanruo he makes eye-contact with Bai Qi and mouths “Fell out of a painting!” before sprinting off.

Pei Wende goes on a journey and picks up two companions along the way. AKA Pei Wende (and his relationship) through the eyes of an outsider.

It’s been coming up on two weeks since they met up with him she can count the number of words that he’s said on one hand, not counting repetitions.

Even when they’d first met and she’d greeted him with a cheery, “I heard from a mutual friend that we may have aligning goals.”

All he’d said in reply was, “En.” before throwing his things over his shoulder and gesturing for the two of them to follow.

“It’s fucking weird,” She hisses to her cousin. “I don’t understand how someone can go so long without talking.”

“Of course you can’t.” Waien teases, giving her a gentle shove with her shoulder. “I don’t know that you can manage fourteen minutes, much less almost fourteen days.”
