A sequel to "Deep Waters Closing Over Our Heads"

Weeks after the flowering, Zhao Yunlan noticed, but he wasn't going to push it. He was just so damn grateful that Shen Wei still wanted him. And they had time—Shen Wei could take the time, as much as he needed.

"Tell me," he mumbles, "Tell me once more. What sort of God are you?"

"I...I am of the fallen leaves." Shen Wei reaches out to hold his cheek against his palm and he closes his eyes. "I am of the worms that churn beneath the earth. The boundary of the forest and the field. The first hint of frost before the first snow falls.The skin of an apple as it yields beneath your teeth."

Zhao Yunlan parts his lips to smile.

"I am the god of dozen different nothings."

In hindsight, maybe Zhao Yunlan did go overboard a little with his teasing.

Wu Tianen is desperate enough to call upon the Black Cloaked Envoy when his young son goes missing. Shen Wei rescues Wu Xiaojun and turns the cruel Haixingren to the appropriate authorities. He ends up mentoring the boy in how to control and conceal his powers. It's one of the things that inspired him to pursue teaching as his civilian job. His former subordinate is too respectful to meddle in Shen Wei's personal life, but Wu Xiaojun has no problem trying to set his uncle up with the guy that he keeps giving googly eyes to.

Zhao Yunlan is passing by one of the Dixing campfires when a familiar scent wafts across his path. Rich and sharp, it brings back the nostalgia of a misspent youth like nothing else.

"Zhao Yunlan, there's only these few decades left. Let's be like mortals and spend our lifetime together, okay?"

Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan were on the brink of turning their relationship into something more...or so Shen Wei thought. Then he found out that Zhao Yunlan thought they were just friends. Really good friends. The sort of really good friends who shared almost all their meals, spent all their time together and potentially even lived together.

Shen Wei was very confused.

When an old friend of Zhao Yunlan’s pays a visit, Shen Wei decides that this is an excellent chance to learn more about Haixingren relationships by agreeing to a friendly outing, much to Zhao Yunlan’s horror.

“Ask Lin Jing where they’re going for the picnic,” Zhao Yunlan ordered, his mind working fast. “We’re not going to do anything, just some light reconnaissance. For the sake of the S.I.D., we should better understand our consultants’ relationships.”

“Yeah, sure, you tell yourself that,” Da Qing said with a snort, but he changed back into his human form and started texting Lin Jing.

Shen Wei decides to pretend to be a harmless and innocent professor to make Zhao Yunlan a little less suspicious. When he hops into Zhao Yunlan's arms in feigned fright, he ends up biting off more than he can chew.

“Kneel.”

Chu Shuzhi was on his knees before his brain had even acknowledged the command. Hei Pao Shi often gave him orders, and he would have done whatever was asked of him regardless, but there was a tone in the Envoy’s voice that caused his breath to catch in his throat.

It’s not easy to tie Shen Wei, the all powerful ghost slayer, up but Zhao Yunlan is determined to achieve it.

The wick of the Guardian Lantern burns. That's what wicks do. It burns, until it doesn't.

"I chose to come to you," Xia Zhu says, as Fu You instructed him to. Not seductively but plainly; that, she'd told him too. "I asked for this honor."

Hei Pao Shi advances another step. He's near enough now that Xia Zhu can smell leather and sweat—like any soldier, though there's an underlying musk; different than the burning braziers, sweet like incense yet sharp in the nose like frost. "It's not an honor," Hei Pao Shi says.

Morning kisses are the best. Zhu Hong’s girlfriend just needs a little bit more convincing. :)
