Every day that Zhao Yunlan woke up next to Shen Wei was a wonderful day.

Today was going to be particularly good, since he had finally convinced Shen Wei that (a) vacations existed, (b) he could take a vacation, and (c) they should take a vacation together to somewhere else. Somewhere nice. Somewhere neither of them had responsibilities.

“The beach?” Shen Wei had hazarded, looking a little uncertain, and Zhao Yunlan had crowed in victory and booked a room in the outskirts of Kraken City immediately so that Shen Wei couldn’t back out.

A weary Zhao Yunlan returns home to find Shen Wei waiting for him.

She still couldn’t think of the Yashou election—or outranking Fourth Uncle and the others—without wanting to squirm out of her skin. But she was high chief. She’d accepted the position. She had to do something about the encroachments, and objectively, Ya Qing was the best choice to help—even if she was also the least comfortable. Even if Zhu Hong couldn’t entirely trust her.

For days, Zhao Yunlan would return to where that specific landscape was and spend some time observing it. Shen Wei wondered what was wrong with that painting, but did not voice his questions. Eventually, his husband would say something about it. It wasn't as if Zhao Yunlan knew how to remain silent for long.
But as he paused once more in front of the painting, there was a certain nostalgia tinged with resignation in his gaze. "The last time we passed this waterfall, I already knew that I would not see my little beauty become a great beauty..."

Inside, Zhao Xinci lets go of Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder and turns to face him with his arms crossed over his chest. The standard Disappointed Father posture, scowl and all. “Yunlan,” he says, “did you think the way you handled this case was appropriate?”

A few years ago, Zhao Yunlan would have lashed out right back. But college had wised him up to what his dad gets out of these little talks, and this first week as SID chief had been a crash course in paying attention to the subtle dynamics of every conversation. Now, he takes note of the way their body language can still be seen by their colleagues through the wood panels, how their conversation will carry if it gets too loud. Now, Zhao Yunlan knows to register the way his father positioned them so only Zhao Yunlan’s face can be seen from the dining room.

Or, events conspire such that new SID chief Zhao Yunlan meets the Black-Cloaked Envoy first.

"No," Juliette says again, "no," and then lashes out - wogeing, her Hexenbiest mien coming to the fore on instinct as her emotions surge. Her frustration and fury shake the house.

Shen Wei has planted his feet solidly, standing firm in the shaking. Most who aren't themselves Hexenbiests tend to find their woge both off-putting and frightening, and even those who don't know enough to be afraid have a visceral reaction. A living bog body, Elizabeth had said once, wryly, who wouldn't be frightened? But not this man.

It's the little things that get to him the most; the way he rubs his neck, the way he leans, indolent, on anything and everything, the way he quirks his head to the side when he's thinking.

If nothing else, Shen Wei thinks that over the years he has become quite good at picking his battles. Unfortunately, sometimes the battles can’t seem to be dissuaded from picking him.

or, his article is stuck in peer review, the universe is out for his blood, the printer is jammed, and Shen Wei is having a very long day.

Shen Wei acquires a new power that leaves him keeping his distance around Zhao Yunlan. Fortunately, Zhao Yunlan figures things out.

He remembered saying goodbye to Zhao Yunlan, some incandescent place between the planes of existence, teary but somehow at peace with it. Their promise still bittersweet on his lips.

Lin Jing tries to compile code; Zhu Hong tries to get the Yashou leaders to cooperate on a project; Guo Changcheng tries to find Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo. All are frustrated.

This is Zhao Yunlan's POV from the ending of chapter 13 of my main fic, We Won't Be Falling Down, and their little ~moment~ after the cage fighting case. It won't make much sense if you haven't read the main fic as much of the scene is written with the assumption you know the dialogue and what happened already in chapter 13.
