Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei take a vacation to a small tourist town to unwind for spring break. It goes in a direction neither of them expected.

In Zhao Yunlan's opinion, you could learn a lot about a person by paying attention to the small details of their appearance.

Scarf Guy takes a deep breath. "Call him," he says ominously, and Glasses looks up at a whiteboard on the wall, covered in photos and printouts.

"He's in class for another hour."

"Who?"

They all turn towards him, looking various shades of stricken.

"Oh no," Dungarees whispers. "This is bad."

A warm weight leans into Shen Wei from the side, tucks its chin against his shoulder, and winds skin-hot hands around him to clasp across his chest. The familiar summertime smell of Zhao Yunlan’s sweat. The familiar rhythm of Zhao Yunlan’s breathing. Shen Wei’s hand, still holding his brush pen, pauses over the lab report he’d been looking over. “Hello, Zhao Yunlan,” he murmurs, and feels more than hears the answering sound of Zhao Yunlan’s voice rumbling through his whole body.

In tehfanglyfish's charming story, Hei Pao Shi is mistakenly identified as a children's birthday party magician late for the gig. As expected, Hei Pao Shi rises to the occasion. And Zhao Yunlan catches in the act.

There was a general named Hei Pao Shi, who dressed in the darkest of robes, and carried the sharpest of swords.
He was the right-hand of the great General Kunlun.

The two generals fought for freedom, peace, for the lives of their people sheltered beneath their banner, but most importantly, for each other.

"The Pride march is this weekend," Shen Wei says after a moment of hesitation. Zhao Yunlan is suddenly very unsure of where this might be going. Shen Wei had asked him if he wants to go to the march. He'd been surprised to be asked and then quickly agreed because if Shen Wei wants to go then Zhao Yunlan will definitely be there with him. They haven't mentioned the whole thing since then.

He can learn many things through observing, but the language of wings is not one of them. More importantly: he doesn’t want to be seen as lacking, not when he was meant to be the unflappable Heipaoshi. It is what the alliance and his people required of him. He didn’t even have to be Shen Wei around them.

Neither the language of Dixing nor that of modern Haixing have anything in common with the speech Shen Wei is accustomed to when he wakes from his ten-thousand-year slumber.

As he finds himself having to change his speech again and again over the years, he struggles to adjust.
